Artificial Intelligence and Behavioral Algorithms to Secure Identity Access Management (AIM) and EfemeralTM Cryptographic Key Issuance
Abstract
Strategic threats in quantum computing and Artificial Intelligence will impact corporations and government in profound ways. AI technologies, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and GitHub’s Copilot continue to lower the entry barrier for threat actors. Copilot can allow an entry-level threat actor develop sophisticated code at lightning speed, while ChatGPT can craft convincing requests which will circumvent security training. AI-enabled behavioral analytics coupled with sophisticated data protection technologies will minimize the threat space by monitoring normal and the detection of anomalous behaviors. When integrated with encryption technologies, such as EfemeralTM, threat actors will be blocked from accessing critical organizational data.
Introduction
The growing financial impact of cybersecurity breaches and data leaks continues to increase year-over-year, reaching astronomical losses for corporations and governments. Corporate and government leaders are increasingly looking for ways to better understand what this means for their organizations and keep pace with the threats.
Challenges confronting CISOs are evolving beyond technology, cybersecurity, and controls, as Gartner predictions for 2023 reveal. “By 2025, lack of talent or human failure will be responsible for over half of significant cyber incidents.” By 2025, the consumerization of AI-enabled attacks will fundamentally change enterprise methodologies to defend their systems and their critical data. With the expected limitations in available talent, corporations and governments must turn to intelligent automated systems capable of identifying and thwarting attacks, at-speed and at-scale.
The top two industries by financial loss exposure continue to be public/government administration and healthcare, whose overall exposure was driven by high event probabilities and moderate to high losses. By risk ranking, the top risk probabilities are insider error, insider misuse and system intrusion. These risks also represent the highest losses to an organization.
Strategic Challenges
Two strategic threats are on the horizon that will change the face of information security in profound ways. Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) and quantum computing will revolutionize how threat actors will take advantage of new threat vectors, yet to be conceived. AI/ML is already becoming a threat with the release of Large Language Models (LLM) solutions, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Any person, without possessing programming skills or knowledge of the English language can code a malicious script using GitHub’s Copilot and a well-crafted phishing email using ChatGPT. As threat actor attacks become more powerful because of these or on-the-horizon AI-inspired tools, individuals with standard security training will fall victim to convincing requests.
Quantum computers have not yet reached a level of sophistication, placing encrypted information at risk. However, the trend in advancing research suggests it is only a matter of time. Although quantum computers will be out of the hands of the ordinary threat actor, geopolitical events and first-world criminal states will undoubtably use this technology to continue to steal cutting-edge research and technology or use their capabilities to aggressively attack counties to signal their malcontent. These countries also blur the line between state-sponsored espionage and state-sponsored criminal activity, often allowing powerful tools to be used intentionally or by disregard, by lower-level threat actors moonlighting as criminals.
The Artificial Intelligence Solution
These strategic threats can be countered; however, it takes a shift in thinking and advancements in technology. AES256 encryption and advancements in quantum resilient encryption algorithms look to lower the threat quantum computer pose against documents protected with encryption.
EfemeralTM is Arcane Cyber’s encryption solution that provides a convenient, light weight, high security, key system with unique key generation process, data handling and packaging characteristics, and key component management as well as enhanced attributes and policy controls. EfemeralTM provides a way to apply access policies to encrypted data objects to aid in the management distribution of the cryptographic key to securely manage the decryption of the data object while also providing a wider range of applicable functions and resulting products.
Artificial Intelligence can have a profound impact on every aspect of our lives, including within the domain of information security and the way we defend our critical data, when coupled with high-security encryption technology.
Behavioral analysis is the process of collecting and analyzing data from activities performed by persons or machine processes. Utilizing end-user activity data, such as log files, AI inspired behaviorally-intelligent algorithms can monitor information access requests by human and computing systems and decide if the end-user should be granted access to the information.
By utilizing AI-enabled behavioral analysis, comprehensive profiles of normal pattern activity for users and systems can be monitored. Deviation from normal behavior can be identified through automated techniques, flagging the access request for additional multi-factor and risk-based authentication, alert, or deny. When integrated with EfemeralTM, the system can ensure that the end-user/process does not receive the cryptographic key to decrypt the data object, ensuring your information is secured against new and emerging threats.
